Championing International Youth Day 2023 with Policy-driven Workshops - BL Partners with Light to Life

Dhaka, Bangladesh — September 12, 2023

Light to Life, a pioneering youth-centric organization, marked International Youth Day 2023 by initiating policy-backed activities. The weeklong event, "Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World", was undertaken in partnership with BacharLorai and a spectrum of community organizations, public sector bodies, and faith-based groups, aiming to bridge policy gaps in mental health, sustainable action, and youth inclusion.

With participation from over 200 nationwide youths, the agenda featured a blend of policy discussions, workshops, and partnerships. Key areas of focus included mental wellness, climate policy, and the linkage between Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and environmental shifts.

In collaboration with BacharLorai (BL), Youth Action For Social Development (YASD), and Prime Bank Eye Hospital, Light to Life curated:

  • United in Mind: A policy workshop, in conjunction with the Kaleidoscope club of ULAB, to formulate policy recommendations on youth mental health. Expert insights were provided by practitioners including Samira Binte Zaman and Afrin Islam.

  • Mirpur Pora Bosti Health Initiative: Orchestrated with Prime Bank Eye Hospital, this health outreach program underscored the policy needs for accessible eye care, benefiting 93 locals and identifying 23 for cataract surgeries.

  • Mental Health and SRHR Policy Session: In collaboration with YASD, this dialogue sought to influence policy frameworks integrating SRHR within the larger climate action narrative.

  • Green Skills Workshop: Set in Jashore Shimulia and crafted with faith-based entities, this session elucidated the policy imperatives for fostering eco-awareness and sustainability among the youth.

Founder and Technical Advisor of Light to Life, Labib Tazone Utshab, emphasized, Empowering today's youth ignites the flames of progress, lighting the path towards a brighter tomorrow. On International Youth Day 2023, let's celebrate the potential, passion, and resilience of our young generation as they shape a world that knows no bounds”

The event was accentuated by policy advocates including Md. Mohiuddin Abir, Sumaiya Akter, and other national and global experts. Key Light to Life members like Sadia Tabassum Talha and Anika Zaman also actively engaged in the proceedings.

Louis Sonjoy Mondol, the event's chief coordinator, highlighted the policy dimensions of 'Green Skills', positioning coastal youth as pivotal in shaping future environmental strategies and protocols.

Light to Life's commitment on International Youth Day 2023 underscores their dedication to marrying youth empowerment with policy innovation, fostering a brighter, policy-driven future.

At the Mipur Pora Bosti event, Aftab Ahmed, Director of Policy Research at BL, emphasized to local youth the significance of leading their community's socio-economic growth and educational awareness.

BacharLorai has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Light to Life, laying foundation for continued sustainable social impact in Bangladesh.
