Context

The 8th SDGs Conference, hosted by the Journalists and Writers Foundation (JWF) in partnership with 52 global partners from 27 countries, took place on the margins of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This annual conference convened world leaders, diplomats, civil society members, journalists, and academics to discuss the contemporary impediments to the timely and effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference, formerly known as the UNGA Conference, is JWF’s flagship event, providing a platform for diverse stakeholders to engage in discussions about the Global Agenda 2030. Over 150 high-level speakers participated across three panel sessions to offer innovative solutions, strategies, and policy recommendations to promote peace, human rights, and sustainable development.

One of the key sessions, Civil Society Contributions in Achieving the SDGs: Best Practices, focused on civil society's role in advancing the SDGs amidst contemporary challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and socio-political conflicts. Panelists shared innovative projects and initiatives that demonstrate the critical role civil society plays in driving sustainable development, especially at the grassroots level. The session underscored the importance of NGO involvement in local communities, where their impact is most direct, while also highlighting the challenges and threats these organizations face in today’s global environment. The discussion emphasized the need for a supportive ecosystem that allows civil society organizations to thrive and continue their vital work.

The panel also explored the importance of global collaboration between civil society, NGOs, governments, and the private sector. This collaboration is essential for building sustainable solutions to a wide range of issues, including education, health, poverty eradication, human rights, gender equality, and indigenous issues. By sharing best practices and fostering partnerships across sectors, the panelists highlighted how collective action can overcome barriers and drive meaningful progress toward the achievement of the SDGs.

The session concluded with a strong call to action, advocating for enhanced cooperation and a supportive environment that empowers civil society to contribute more effectively to the SDGs. Through a combination of grassroots efforts and cross-sector partnerships, the session presented a comprehensive framework for addressing the unique challenges faced by civil society organizations while advancing the global agenda for sustainable development.

The 8th SDGs Conference reinforced the crucial role of civil society in achieving the SDGs and provided a platform for global stakeholders to share insights, propose solutions, and collaborate on a sustainable future.
